TART PIE CHERRY TREE

PIE or TART CHERRY TREE / BUSH

Small, round-headed tree with drooping branches (easy to harvest), or can be grown as bush. Often grown as an ornamental.

Tart cherries, which are sometimes called sour, red cherries, or pie cherries, are best known as the key ingredient in desserts. They are also delicious in main courses, salads, jams and jellies, and beverages. Tart cherries are seldom sold fresh in your local grocery store. They are harvested in July and usually frozen, canned, or dried for use throughout the year. You\'ll need to find a farmers\' market to purchase them fresh or just grow your own!

Tart cherry trees are usually smaller than sweet cherry trees. Sour cherry trees also grow in a wider range of climates. The fruit of the sour cherry is also more variable in that it can be cooked so it is often used in pies, jams, tarts, and other preserves. Also, if it is allowed to ripen on the tree, it eventually becomes sweet and can be enjoyed fresh. Sour cherry trees will produce fruit when pollinated with their own pollen or with pollen from another sour cherry variety.

Damson Plum Tree

DAMSON PLUM TREE

The Damson plum has a small, oval fruit, and is good for canning. The dark purple skin covers the golden yellow flesh. It has a spicy, tart flavor. Damsons are used for cooking, jam & wine making. A hardy, tree, largely untroubled by pests and diseases. Damsons succeed where most plums would fail. They are semi-shade tolerant and they grow to 12-14 ft. They make good windbreaks and hedges, though they are not likely to fruit well if they are very exposed. Damsons are self-fertile. Trees are currently 2-3 foot tall.
